What are Dental Implants

Dental implants were discovered by Professor Brånemark in Sweden 1965. He discovered that titanium screws can osseointegrate (fuse with the jawbone). A dental implant is used to support one or more false teeth. It’s a titanium screw that replaces your lost root in the jawbone.

How long do implants last

Like your own teeth, dental implants will last as long as you care for them. The most important factor for how long implants will last is how well you look after them and whether you go for regular maintenance appointments. Just like your teeth, if you neglect them and don’t look after them, this can lead to gum infection and further discomfort. Well looked after dental implants in healthy strong bone can be expected to last for many years. However, just as with other implants (such as a hip replacement) there is no lifetime guarantee.

Can anyone have implants

This will depend on your general health and the health of your jawbone. We do take x-rays and sometimes need a special 3D radiograph to evaluate the condition of your bone. If you don’t have enough bone or your bone isn’t healthy enough, bone grafting may be needed prior to the placement of the implant.

How is it done

Implants are placed under simple local anaesthetic. It’s often easier to place an implant than it is to take a tooth out. After the implants have been placed, the bone in your jaw needs to grow onto them and fuse to them. This usually takes a few months. Sometimes the implant is stable enough to have a temporary crown placed on top immediately, or in the event of several implants placed, a temporary denture is placed immediately. Just like after an extraction, you may feel some discomfort during the week after the surgery.

Who carries out the surgery?

Dr Carl G. Manhem DDS provides implants at NHS Dentist. Dr Manhem is one of the most experienced implant surgeons in the UK. He is a registered Oral Surgeon in Sweden, Denmark and the UK.

Working in tandem with Dr Manhem will be one of our own dentists. They will be responsible for completing the aesthetic element of the implant procedure, i.e. the making and fitting the crown on top of the implant.
